Green Fashion: Mark Liu Zero Waste Design

i think i'm going crazy with this eco-green madness! so, not just graphic designer who taking act of going green but fashion designer also tries to save the world. For example Mark Liu with his zero waste design project where he already showcased his line in London Fashion Week. His materials are recycled and light in footprint but substantial in style. According to Liu's word,

"Approximately 15% of fabric is typically wasted in the pattern cutting and sewing of each garment manufactured."

Therefore, Liu has created a method of cutting a jigsaw pattern from a single piece of fabric in order to create all of the components to be assembled in his design and create zero waste. Liu also believe eco-efficiency creates exquisite new products for the consumer.

World Wildlife Fund Super Smart Eco Ad Campaign

while I was trying to find graphic design agency that is going sustainable, I came across to this founding of smart eco ad campaign and both campaign were design by the famous Saatchi & Saatchi

look at this interesting bathroom towel dispenser. it is very clever and symbolize the nasty environmental impact of disposable paper towels. this message of communication design is very clear that in every piece of paper you take is a piece of South America's rainforest.

this would be my favorite billboard and it is from Saatchi & Saatchi also. This eco-ad demonstrate how global warming will lead to rising water levels with a shaped canopy and the shifting sun. Below is a YouTube video of this brilliant billboard in action.

Hypothesis.

It has been awhile that I haven't post anything here. So right now I feel the need to put my hypothesis of my design research proposal and I've sent the hypothesis to my lecture which she already gave me a feedback. From the tutorial that I have today, I think she accept my idea and I just need to do more research on books and get more deeper on my topic with more details. I also need to start making research on graphic design agency that is going green since in Malaysia, I don't think there is any agency that's going eco-friendly, yet. So here is my overview of the hypothesis.

"The theme that I have choose is "Design for Need/Sustainable Design". This topic is mainly concern about designing for different needs in social, cultural, physiological, psychological, biological and environment. I chose this topic because nowadays our Earth is under the weather of climate changes (Global Warming), which I am very interested in since I want to know deeper on how the designers around the world are taking act and participate to help the Earth from melting down. So, after doing endless research about the topic, I am settling down with a main topic of, Sustainable Design fro Graphic Design Agency and The Environment. I chose to be more focus on this topic because since I, myself is a soon-to-be designer, I want to know more on how the agency becoming sustainable, their point of view, the impact on them of becoming sustainable and how this will affect the environment. Therefore, my hypothesis for my research proposal would be somewhere around "Can A Graphic Design Agency Survive By Going Sustainable?" and I would organize my topic and research paper mainly with the positive and negative impacts of the agency going sustainable and what are the problems. Thus, for the field research, I think doing a survey and interview are the best way to collect information and internet would be and additional for my research."

Designers & Consciousness.

The climate changes and global warming are the hot topic. Everyone in the world is trying to prevent our Earth from melting down including us, the designers. Through endless browsing the net, this are some the article that I found is quiet interesting for our common knowledge.

The Plan B: Noah’s ark of seeds
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is now officially open as of last week, after nearly thirty years of planning. The facility is not only a storage space for seeds from all over the world, it’s a gorgeous structure to boot, built in the permafrost of a mountain on Spitsbergen Island in the Arctic Island Svalbard, that is part of Norway. The Global Seed Vault has been designed to store duplicates of seeds from seed collections from around the globe and from nearly every variety of food crop on the planet, such as wheat, rice or maize. So in the event of global catastrophe, we’ll be agriculturally prepared!

The Big Ask
The Big Ask unites Friends of the Earth groups across Europe in a call for governments to commit to binding annual targets for cutting emissions. Around Europe people are asking their politicians to take responsibility for tackling dangerous climate change. The launch of the campaign this week, involved endorsement from Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

From this article it makes me aware of how human have to be quick to make decision about the Global Warming issue. This lead to the topic of my design research proposal which is about sustainable design or green design. I chose this topic because I think we, designers, have a big role in communicating with people and gives them some example about saving the world. Below are some of the agency that going green:

One of a communication design agency that commits to high quality design, humour, fresh ways to communicate, and innovative use of materials (sustainable materials). They believes in two things: good design and sustainability.
This is how thomas.matthews fight for climate change:
1. re-thinking 6. designing to last
2. re-using 7. staying local, buying ethical
3. using friendly materials 8. supporting what we believe
4. saving energy 9. inspiring, having fun
5. sharing new ideas 10. saving money

Another graphic design firm that going sustainable for their studio. This are their interview of how they're going sustainable.
