The new invention: Telectroscope

Telectroscope is the most original piece of art and spectacular invention ever! Now people in London and New York can take a peek of each other from the giant telescope. World is really changing, you can actually see people from the other side of the world, Amazing! The telectroscope tunnel itself run deep under the Atlantic Ocean, it blew my mind and I'm dying to try it out. Someone please take me either to London or NY please :p

for the sake of not forgetting.

i think i really need this wallpaper in my room so I wont forget what I have to do since other calendar never really work for me. this one I think is big enough =D

"The calendar plays an important role in our daily life, we might not always be aware, but it strongly influences how we structure our days. Without a calendar our lives would be more ineffiecient and confusing to live. By merging qualities from an everyday item like a wallpaper with functions from a calendar that we use daily, something ordinary like a wall becomes alive and personal." (Christiaan Postma)

PoeiOei.

I found this new collection of bag from my friend's website and I easily falling in love with it. PoeiOei's collection of bags are all handcrafted from Indonesia (my country) with genuine leather and batik tulis. Below are some pictures of the bags that I fall in love with especially the new collection of summer '08, which is the laptop case.

Long Time.

It has been quiet sometimes that I haven't update this blog. After all the workloads of assignments, I finally had a chance to blog again. So, some weeks ago I submitted my Design Research Report assignment, which was about Sustainable Design. Here are the link if you would like to download the document file of my research report.

From last week, my lecture gave back my report and gave me some feedback about what kind of things that I have to add and fix for my report. She said that my report is good but I have to add more of literature review, in-text citations, footnotes and proposed theoretical framework. Also, I did a mistake on doing the referencing. I was suppose to use the Chicago format and then without realizing it, I used the Harvard format (Stupid, I know) so I have to fix it.

That's all that I have to do for improving my report and I think next week I have to pass the improve report again to my lecture. I hope this time I won't do any stupid mistake :)

black balloons.

The Victorian Government is running a campaign about energy saving for their homes.

This Save Energy campaign is encouraging us to save energy at home to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the impact of climate change. The balloons that are featured in the campaign represents 50 grams of greenhouse gas/each. By saving energy, you'll save money, as well as help protect our environment from the impacts of climate change.

Here you can view the television commercials from both the 2006 and 2007 seasons of the
Victorian Energy Savings Campaign.

i really like how this commercial educated us and not being too formal or serious. there is still a sense of entertainment in it (esp. the black balloons).

in-depth research.

Today I’m researching about my topic of sustainability design more in depth. Then I came across to these interesting notes and quotes for my report:

  • The fact that the number of magazines sold in Australia each month is over 18 million copies (Magazine Publishers of Australia n.d.), shows how changes to the specifications can make a huge difference, since the fact that it is only in Australia, who knows how many copies each month magazines company wasted on paper for the world. So, to solve this kind of problem, there is actually a way to reduce it. For instance, Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), an outdoor retail and rental company in Canada, minimized the environmental impact of their printed catalogues by purchasing reduced weight and recycled content paper. MEC estimate that, for their 2007 Spring and Summer print run of over 600,000 catalogues (French and English editions), which is the specification of at least 30% post-consumer fiber saved the use of 1,483 trees, over a million liters of water, and reduced energy output and greenhouse gas emissions. (MEC, 2006).
  • “The designer’s creative ability can help solve many environmental problems. —Anne Chick (1992 p.32)
  • Designers are trained to analyze problems and provide creative solutions, and clients seek professional guidance on issues surrounding their design job. As the expert, at least some of the responsibility for using sustainable methods must rest with the designer.
  • “Clients depend on professionals’ expertise – that’s what they’re paying for.” —Anne Chick (1992 p.33)
  • “Let’s face it – we are the last generation before everything goes to pot. —Charles Purcell, Sydney Morning Herald, Oct 24 2007
  • In Rick Poynor’s essay titled “Look Inward, Australia” he discusses the phenomenon of designers becoming less anonymous, and more concerned with achieving fame, with design as an expression of style rather than substance.

Green Fashion: Mark Liu Zero Waste Design

i think i'm going crazy with this eco-green madness! so, not just graphic designer who taking act of going green but fashion designer also tries to save the world. For example Mark Liu with his zero waste design project where he already showcased his line in London Fashion Week. His materials are recycled and light in footprint but substantial in style. According to Liu's word,

"Approximately 15% of fabric is typically wasted in the pattern cutting and sewing of each garment manufactured."

Therefore, Liu has created a method of cutting a jigsaw pattern from a single piece of fabric in order to create all of the components to be assembled in his design and create zero waste. Liu also believe eco-efficiency creates exquisite new products for the consumer.

World Wildlife Fund Super Smart Eco Ad Campaign

while I was trying to find graphic design agency that is going sustainable, I came across to this founding of smart eco ad campaign and both campaign were design by the famous Saatchi & Saatchi

look at this interesting bathroom towel dispenser. it is very clever and symbolize the nasty environmental impact of disposable paper towels. this message of communication design is very clear that in every piece of paper you take is a piece of South America's rainforest.

this would be my favorite billboard and it is from Saatchi & Saatchi also. This eco-ad demonstrate how global warming will lead to rising water levels with a shaped canopy and the shifting sun. Below is a YouTube video of this brilliant billboard in action.

Hypothesis.

It has been awhile that I haven't post anything here. So right now I feel the need to put my hypothesis of my design research proposal and I've sent the hypothesis to my lecture which she already gave me a feedback. From the tutorial that I have today, I think she accept my idea and I just need to do more research on books and get more deeper on my topic with more details. I also need to start making research on graphic design agency that is going green since in Malaysia, I don't think there is any agency that's going eco-friendly, yet. So here is my overview of the hypothesis.

"The theme that I have choose is "Design for Need/Sustainable Design". This topic is mainly concern about designing for different needs in social, cultural, physiological, psychological, biological and environment. I chose this topic because nowadays our Earth is under the weather of climate changes (Global Warming), which I am very interested in since I want to know deeper on how the designers around the world are taking act and participate to help the Earth from melting down. So, after doing endless research about the topic, I am settling down with a main topic of, Sustainable Design fro Graphic Design Agency and The Environment. I chose to be more focus on this topic because since I, myself is a soon-to-be designer, I want to know more on how the agency becoming sustainable, their point of view, the impact on them of becoming sustainable and how this will affect the environment. Therefore, my hypothesis for my research proposal would be somewhere around "Can A Graphic Design Agency Survive By Going Sustainable?" and I would organize my topic and research paper mainly with the positive and negative impacts of the agency going sustainable and what are the problems. Thus, for the field research, I think doing a survey and interview are the best way to collect information and internet would be and additional for my research."

Designers & Consciousness.

The climate changes and global warming are the hot topic. Everyone in the world is trying to prevent our Earth from melting down including us, the designers. Through endless browsing the net, this are some the article that I found is quiet interesting for our common knowledge.

The Plan B: Noah’s ark of seeds
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is now officially open as of last week, after nearly thirty years of planning. The facility is not only a storage space for seeds from all over the world, it’s a gorgeous structure to boot, built in the permafrost of a mountain on Spitsbergen Island in the Arctic Island Svalbard, that is part of Norway. The Global Seed Vault has been designed to store duplicates of seeds from seed collections from around the globe and from nearly every variety of food crop on the planet, such as wheat, rice or maize. So in the event of global catastrophe, we’ll be agriculturally prepared!

The Big Ask
The Big Ask unites Friends of the Earth groups across Europe in a call for governments to commit to binding annual targets for cutting emissions. Around Europe people are asking their politicians to take responsibility for tackling dangerous climate change. The launch of the campaign this week, involved endorsement from Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

From this article it makes me aware of how human have to be quick to make decision about the Global Warming issue. This lead to the topic of my design research proposal which is about sustainable design or green design. I chose this topic because I think we, designers, have a big role in communicating with people and gives them some example about saving the world. Below are some of the agency that going green:

One of a communication design agency that commits to high quality design, humour, fresh ways to communicate, and innovative use of materials (sustainable materials). They believes in two things: good design and sustainability.
This is how thomas.matthews fight for climate change:
1. re-thinking 6. designing to last
2. re-using 7. staying local, buying ethical
3. using friendly materials 8. supporting what we believe
4. saving energy 9. inspiring, having fun
5. sharing new ideas 10. saving money

Another graphic design firm that going sustainable for their studio. This are their interview of how they're going sustainable.
